7:00 pmto8:00 pm

General:

Sources of Energy outlines the possible forms and relative magnitudes that energy can be present in, as well as common mechanisms used to convert that energy into a form useful to us.  The content of this section is meant to provide a general background on energy that later topics will build upon.

Symposium:

This presentation will be based on the major global challenges and trends associated with different energy sources related to electricity generation; including the importance of energy security and economic sustainability.  The seminar will identify the major sources of energy used for electricity and will discuss the importance of technology diversity to balance sustainability goals.

•    Topic: “Energy Sources for Electricity Generation”
•    Day: Thursday November 13, 2008
•    Time:  7:00 PM
•    Location: McDonnell Douglas Engineering Auditorium (MDEA)
•    Speaker: Prof. William R. Seeker

o    PhD. Kansas State University,
o    Adjunct Professor, Dept: Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

7:00 pmto8:30 pm

Come watch a movie with us Tuesday, Oct 28, 7pm, in MDEA. We will be watching ‘The 11th Hour’ (1.5 hours) with discussion after. This is taking the place of this months field trip, since the monthly topic ‘State of the Earth’  doesn’t lend itself well to an exciting location. It will also be a good chance for us all to get to know each other. Feel free to bring food and friends.

SETC Presents:

OCTOBER - State of the Earth: Past, Present and Future

General:

State of the Earth: Past, Present and Future is an immensely large topic of discussion for Sustainable Energy and defines the motivation for studying the effects of causality in the modern world. In particular, State of the Earth will take a look into changes and aid us in the exploration of specific questions we have. These questions include, but are not limited to: “What is the problem(s) we face?”, “What are major causes or catalysts for these problem(s)?”, and “How will this affect us in the future?”

Symposium:

This presentation outlines the motivation to studying sustainability. The focus is on earth system science from an environmental perspective, and the role of energy utilization in affecting the quality of the air and the global climate. Topics addressed include the types of criteria for pollutant and greenhouse gas emissions, the chemistry of the atmosphere, the role of the public, and the changes that we can expect in engineering systems through the twenty-first century.

•    Topic: “Environmental State of the Earth: Past, Present, Future”
•    Day: Tuesday October 7, 2008
•    Time: 7:00 PM
•    Location: McDonnell Douglas Engineering Auditorium (MDEA)
•    Speaker: Prof. G. Scott Samuelsen

o    PhD UC Berkeley,
o    Director of National Fuel Cell Research Center,
o    Director of Advanced Power and Energy Program,
o    Professor of ME, AE, and EnvE
